Physics Graduate Matthew Otten Awarded SPS Herbert Levy Memorial Endowment Fund Scholarship

Recent IIT graduate Matthew Otten (PHYS ’13) has been awarded the Society of Physics Students (SPS) Herbert Levy Memorial Endowment Fund Scholarship. The scholarship, funded by a donation from Margaret Sussman Levy in honor of her late husband, Herbert Levy, consists of $2,000 to be used by a worthy physics student in the acquisition of a quality physics education. Otten is one of only two recipients of the award this year.

Otten plans to use his scholarship toward funding his PhD in physics, specifically condensed matter theory, which he will begin working on at Cornell University this fall. At IIT, Otten was a member of multiple groups and societies. He served as president of the Society of Physics Students for two years, restarted the physics honor society Sigma Pi Sigma and served as executive vice president of the Student Government Association. In addition to earning his degree in physics, he also minored in philosophy and sociology of science.
