Election Day (November 6) is fast approaching and I do want to encourage all eligible students to exercise their right to vote. For those students who are not citizens of the United States, I hope that you will follow the election and watch the results come in on Election Day so that you can learn about the American political process.

If you are eligible and have not registered to vote, I urge you to do so. The last day to register is October 9. To register to vote, you must:
• be a United States citizen;
• be at least 18 years of age by Election Day;
• live in your precinct at least 30 days before the election; and
• not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

Chicago voters may register for the first time—or update their records if they have moved or changed their names since they registered:
• by completing and mailing in an Illinois Voter Registration Application (available here);
• in person at the Chicago Board of Elections, located at 69 West Washington Street, 6th Floor;
• at any Secretary of State’s office where driver’s licenses and state IDs are issued; or
• through an active deputy registrar affiliated with a local organization such as a political party, ward organization or other state-certified body.

All polling places in Chicago will be open on Election Day from 6 am – 7 pm. Although polling places have not yet been designated, as Election Day nears, the Chicago Election website can be used to locate your designated polling place.

Illinois Institute of Technology, as a tax-exempt entity, is prohibited from participating or intervening in any campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for elective office and must refrain from engaging in partisan political activity. As such there can be no campaigning by any IIT employee or staff member during regular working hours or on IIT property.
