Rethinking Rubrics: Enhancing Clarity, Consistency, and Feedback

Rubrics have become essential tools for fostering transparency, promoting fairness, and supporting student success. This interactive one-hour virtual workshop on October 22, 2025, at 12:45–1:45 p.m. is designed for faculty who want to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of their assessment practices through thoughtful rubric design and implementation.

Register for the workshop here.

Participants will explore the key purposes and benefits of using rubrics—not only as grading tools but for learning, feedback, and alignment with course outcomes.

Faculty will have the opportunity to critique sample rubrics and begin developing or refining a rubric for one of their own assignments.

By the end of the session, participants will walk away with a clearer understanding of how rubrics can simplify grading, improve the quality of feedback, and help students better understand expectations and achieve course learning outcomes.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the value of rubrics for both instructors and students.
  • Differentiate between types of rubrics and their appropriate uses.
  • Analyze the components of an effective rubric.
  • Begin creating or revising a rubric for one of their own assignments.
