S.Y. Chen Attends IAEA Meeting to Help Develop Safety Guide for Nuclear and Radiological Emergency

S.Y. IAEA.JPGS.Y. Chen, director of the Master of Health Physics Program, was invited by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to attend the Fourth Consultancy Meeting on Developing a Safety Guide on Arrangements for the Termination of a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency. The meeting took place March 9-13, 2015 at the IAEA’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

During the meeting, Chen and other international consultants updated the international safety guide for transitioning from a major nuclear emergency to long-term recovery. This included incorporating new developments since the guide was last published in 2002, including lessons identified in the response to the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Chen served as U.S. expert at the meeting, having recently chaired the group that produced the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) Report 175 on long-term recovery from radiological emergencies.
