Sawyier Lecture: “Does Determinism Clash with Freedom?”

Join Columbia University’s Jenann Ismael on Thursday, September 20 from 3:15–4:45 p.m. in the McCormick Tribune Campus Center Ballroom for the Sawyier Lecture in Science, Technology, and Society. Ismael, current professor of philosophy at Columbia University, will give a talk titled “Does Determinism Clash with Freedom? A Fresh Look at Human Action Through the Lenses of (Classical) Physics.”

Classical physics dating from the 17th century would seem to entail that all of our future actions are determined by facts about the past and the laws of nature. This talk will argue that a deterministic physics is not incompatible with human free will and the conflict is merely apparent.

Refreshments will be served at 2:45 p.m. before the lecture. Contact Warren Schmaus with any questions about the event.
