Scott Marks Named Head Baseball Coach

Scott Marks has been named head baseball coach and sports information director at Illinois Tech. Marks has been the assistant coach at CCAC rival Purdue North Central for the last three seasons.

“Scott is the right person to lead our baseball program as we transition to NCAA Division III. He is a young energetic coach who has shown the ability to teach the game and recruit the type of students who will be successful at IIT,” said Director of Athletics Enzley Mitchell IV.  “I am confident he can develop our pitching and manage close games. The experience he gained from working under Coach Webber at PNC will help make him a great fit for us.”

His playing career began at Grand Rapid Community College (MI) where he was a pitcher for the 2005 NJCAA D-II National Champions. Next it was on to NCAA Division II LeMoyne Owen College where he earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors as a designated hitter in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference SIAC. As a pitcher, the right-hander led the team in games started, wins and ERA, finishing 7-2 in 14 starts with a 2.97 ERA.

His playing career concluded at Purdue University North Central as a pitcher where he helped the Panthers to two straight 28-win seasons and a program best second place finish in the CACC in 2007. Marks helped PNC qualify for the postseason both years but they were eliminated in the CCAC Tournament in 2007 and defeated in the CCAC Tournament Championship game in extra innings in 2008.

Marks received his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Purdue North Central in 2008 and earned his MBA from PNC in 2011.

Marks joined the coaching ranks as an assistant coach at his alma mater in 2010. He served as pitching coach, hitting coach and outfield coach during his tenure at PNC. In his first year as pitching coach in 2011, Marks lead the team to a school record 3.78 ERA.

PNC finished 29-30 and 16-14 in the CCAC last season after a 25-23 and 17-11 conference campaign during the 2010-11 season. Marks worked for long-time baseball coach John Weber at PNC.

Marks will begin his coaching and administrative duties at IIT on August 27.
