Attend a discussion led by Michael Maher, author of Being Gay and Lesbian in a Catholic High School: Beyond the Uniform, for a discussion at 12:45 pm on Thursday, October 24, 2013 in the McCormick Tribune Campus Center Auditorium regarding his experiences and research in Uganda with the LGBTQ and Catholic communities.
With support of The Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage at Loyola University Chicago, Maher was able to travel to Uganda in 2012 and 2013 to conduct interviews with 40 Catholic schoolteachers, LGBTQ individuals, and other cultural informants.
This occurred as a result of Member of Parliament David Bahati proposing a bill in the Ugandan Parliament in 2009 that would include the death penalty for homosexuality in certain cases. The Catholic bishops of Uganda were one of the few religious bodies to publicly oppose the bill, while at the same time continuing to condemn homosexuality.
