Professor Segerstrale to Discuss Her New Book, Nature’s Oracle

Professor Ullica Segerstrale will talk about her new book Nature’s Oracle: The Life and Work of W. D. Hamilton (Oxford 2013) on May 2 at 3:15 pm, Perlstein Hall Auditorium. There will be a reception and book-signing afterward; books will be available for cash only at a discount for those who would like to purchase one.

Please RSVP to jmaciuke@iit.edu by April 30.

Nature’s Oracle has been reviewed by Science, the Economist, the Guardian, the Telegraph, Nature, and other media. Segerstrale gave a public presentation about the book in March at Oxford University.

A great science mind, and often controversial, Hamilton changed evolutionary paradigms. He especially addressed two questions left unanswered by Charles Darwin: 1) How can altruistic behavior ever make evolutionary sense? Why do animals sacrifice their lives, or work for other animals? And 2) what is the evolutionary point of having sexual instead of asexual reproduction? He also went on to solve many other puzzles, opening up and structuring ever-new research fields.
