Solo and Small Practice Incubator Is Now Accepting Applications

The Solo and Small Practice Incubator (SSPI) is a one-year program designed to offer a select group of entrepreneurial-minded recent IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law graduates with valuable experience and ongoing training to help build their professional careers as solo or small firm legal practitioners. The program is intended to accelerate the successful development of newly admitted lawyers in an “incubator” environment. Applicants accepted for 2013–14 will begin the program in November.

Participants are provided an office with basic office fixtures; experiential training on law firm management, including topics such as retainer agreements, client intake, billing practices, case management, discovery and other practice-related topics; access to Lexis and Westlaw; alumni-mentors; clinical faculty-mentors/supervisors to help participants navigate different selected practice areas; business-development resources; and networking opportunities to enhance participants’ professional careers.

Although there is no program fee to participate in SSPI, participants are required to spend 5–10 hours per week (to be agreed upon by the participant and his/her faculty-mentor) on cases in the Law Offices of Chicago-Kent, a teaching, fee-generating law firm that delivers legal services to the community and provides clinical education to students, under the tutelage of Chicago-Kent’s clinical faculty.

Participation is limited to a select group of recent IIT Chicago-Kent graduates, with priority given to members of the Class of 2013. Prospective participants may download the 2013 application document that provides more details about the program and requirements, the application process, and the application form. Applications are due by September 12, 2013. For more information, contact Dawn Young at dyoung@kentlaw.iit.edu.
