Staff Commencement Volunteers Needed

Staff volunteers are being sought for the 2017–18 Opening Commencement Ceremony and Academic Unit Ceremonies, which will be held on Mies (Main) Campus on Saturday, May 12. Staff volunteers help make commencement a truly special experience for graduating students and their families.

Staff volunteers for the Opening Ceremony will need to be available from 7:00 a.m. until approximately noon on May 12 and will be asked to attend an informational meeting in early May. Volunteers will serve as greeters, help in the student line up area and on the baseball field. If you would like to volunteer for the Opening Commencement Ceremony, or an Academic Unit Ceremony sign up here.

This opportunity is only available to Illinois Tech employees whose positions do not require them to attend these events, as employees who are required to be present at these events will be compensated accordingly. The decision to volunteer is solely up to the employee, and the decision to volunteer or not to volunteer will have no consequence of any kind. As a volunteer, you are freely choosing to give up your Saturday to donate your time to help the university’s commencement activities, and you will not be paid any compensation for doing so, overtime or otherwise. As a token of appreciation, those who so choose to volunteer will receive one paid day off for electing to volunteer their time. The day off, which must be coordinated in advance as with any other day off, must be taken by Friday, June 29, 2018. If the free day is not taken by June 29, 2018, it will expire. The free day off is not, and is not intended to be, part of an employee’s bank of vacation or sick days.

There will be a designated sign-in for volunteers, and volunteers will receive a light breakfast, lunch, and a volunteer t-shirt. For more updates about the commencement ceremony, visit the commencement website.
