AUSTIN, Texas—Illinois Tech Athletics now has its first-ever Google Cloud Academic All-America® recipient in the Division III era. After being named All-Region on May 9, Ted Howell of Illinois Tech baseball was named Second Team Academic All-America, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
As Tech’s primary first baseman, Howell put together an outstanding 2019 campaign for the Scarlet Hawks. The Colorado native lead the team in home runs with eight while also driving in 28 runs. He sported a .295 batting average, .364 on-base percentage, .600 slugging percentage, and a .964 on-base plus slugging. One of his eight home runs came in walk-off fashion against Wisconsin Lutheran College on April 15. He has committed just four errors in 233 total chances.
Off the field, the Colorado native sported a perfect grade point average while pursuing a master’s degree in both mechanical and aerospace engineering, despite it being just his junior year. The five-time dean’s list recipient also serves as a lab assistant at Illinois Tech and has held a leadership position in Delta Tau Fraternity every semester. In addition, Howell has worked on projects such as making a portable nebulizer for delivering asthma medication and designing a product that chills a room temperature beverage to ice cold in 30 seconds.
Howell is just one of 33 NCAA Division III baseball student-athletes and three first basemen nationwide to receive the Google Cloud Academic All-America® honor. He is also the only Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference representative to receive a placement as high as Second Team.
