You are invited to “Unforgotten Women: Keeping Legacies Alive through Stories,” an event that recognizes the power of artistic creation to document, share and celebrate the stories of the countless women who have been under-recognized for their contributions. Writer Mairead Case, filmmaker Melina Kolb and interdisciplinary artist Saleem Hue Penny highlight three women whose lives and work deserve to be known and remembered. Join us to “unforget” and celebrate!

About the presenters:
• Mairead Case is a writer, teacher and graduate student with recent work in Bright Stupid Confetti and The Unified Field. Currently, she is youth services assistant at the Poetry Foundation Library and edits books and magazines for featherproof, Yeti, The Chicagoan and the Public Media Institute, among others. She is completing a novel. Her website is maireadcase.tumblr.com.
• Melina Kolb is a Chicago-based video producer and aspiring documentary filmmaker. For this event, she is screening part of her debut feature-length documentary, Remember Me Sue. The film examines the life’s work of Sue Duncan, mother of United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, teaching children on the South Side of Chicago. Kolb originally filmed Sue in 2004 for a short documentary that screened on CurrentTV and as part of Independent Film Week.
• Saleem Hue Penny is an interdisciplinary artist and child advocate. For music, creative writing, mixed media and performance art, he uses the acronym “h.u.e” to represent “hope-uplifts-everything.” On weekends, he screenprints baby clothes based on his in-process children’s book. During the week, he works with advocates to extend more pre-K options to children of teen parents. Extended bio and audio samples are available at hueart.org.
