Women’s Lacrosse Earns Key MWLC Victory

CHICAGO—The Illinois Tech women’s lacrosse team played an important Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) match this past Sunday afternoon against Augsburg. With a 13-6 victory, the Scarlet Hawks (7-3, 7-2 MWLC) moved into a tie with the Auggies (7-4, 7-2 MWLC) for the fourth and final conference tournament spot.

Match Highlights

  • Despite the dominant victory for Tech, it was the Auggies that struck first. Augsburg’s Annika Hegrenes scored the first of her three goals of the day three and a half minutes in.
  • Tech responded with four goals over the next five and a half minutes to take a 4-1 lead, two of which came courtesy of Shanie Scoles.
  • While the Auggies scored two of the last three goals in the first half, Scoles scored her third first-half goal in between the Augsburg tallies to make it a 5-3 score at halftime.
  • Augsburg managed to hold Tech to just five first half goals thanks to nine saves from goalkeeper Maddie Seykora, as the Scarlet Hawks outshot the Auggies 20-11 in the first half.
  • In the second half, it was easier for the hawks to get shots past Seykora. DeLuca and Scoles each did over the first six minutes before Madison Meredith scored twice. Meredith’s second goal at the 19:14 mark opened up a 5-0 run.
  • Tech’s 13th and final goal of the match came courtesy of Mallory Tognetti with 5:58 left.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • DeLuca was an absolute force in all facets of the game, forcing seven turnovers, scooping up six ground balls, tallying four draw controls, and scoring three goals. Her seven caused turnovers accounted for half of Tech’s total.
  • Scoles once again led the Scarlet Hawks in goals with five. She also totaled one assist and six draw controls.
  • Meredith also had a three-goal day while scooping up three ground balls and four draw controls.
  • Tognetti also had a banner day with one goal and three assists.

Stats to Know

  • The Scarlet Hawks outshot the Auggies 35-21.
  • A big stat in this one was clears, as the Scarlet Hawks were an astounding 16-of-19 in the category. Augsburg was 13-of-23.
  • On the draw, the Scarlet Hawks held a 14-7 advantage.
