Women’s Soccer Drops Season Opener at Anderson, Home Opener Against Trine

The Illinois Tech Women’s Soccer team traveled to Indiana for its season-opening match at Anderson University on September 2. The Scarlet Hawks were defeated by the Ravens 5-0. They then hosted Trine University in the 2017 home opener on September 3. In a tight match throughout, Trine edged out Illinois Tech 1-0.

How it Happened – Anderson

  • The scoring started early for the Ravens, as AU’s Beverly Tanner scored just 95 seconds into the match to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Emily Buchman scored twice in the first half (12th minute, 37th minute) to extend AU’s lead to 3-0.
  • The Ravens added another goal from Emily Reed in the 39th minute to take a 4-0 advantage into halftime.
  • Anderson scored once more in the second half, coming courtesy of Tanner in the 83rd minute.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Julia Taliana, in her first collegiate match, led the team with three shots and two shots on goal.
  • Gillian Larsen also generated some chances in her first match, taking two shots and adding a shot on goal.
  • Kirsten Robinson attempted the other shot on goal.

Stats to Know

  • Anderson outshot the Scarlet Hawks 25-11.
  • Illinois Tech led in corner kicks 5-3.
  • Anderson committed 12 fouls compared to just five for the Scarlet Hawks.

How it Happened – Trine

  • Both teams had minimal offense in the first half, but Trine was able to squeak across a goal courtesy of Erica Hoot in the 13th minute.
  • Illinois Tech turned away two shots on goal in the first half to keep the score at 1-0 heading into intermission.
  • The Scarlet Hawks were able to play more aggressively in the second half. The team’s best chance was when a Kirsten Robinson shot in the 81st minute from about 25 yards out hit off the top post and back into play.
  • Trine was able to hold off a few Illinois Tech chances down the stretch.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Playing in her second collegiate match in goal, Elizabeth Bremer put together a strong match. The sophomore tallied seven saves.
  • Robinson led the team with five shots and a shot on goal.
  • Katie Hoefgen attempted two shots of her own.

Stats to Know

  • Trine outshot Illinois Tech 15-11.
  • There were very few fouls in the contest, as Illinois Tech committed seven compared to Trine’s six.
  • Trine held the edge in corners 7-4.
