Abstract
Eleven years ago Quincy Street Distillery was established in the historic village of Riverside, Illinois, by a physicist with an interest in spirits and their history. Today the craft distillery produces a broad range of artisanal spirits by hand. Yet, in their production, there are still opportunities to use modern science to analyze and explain what makes these spirits unique.
Biography
Derrick C. Mancini is currently the owner and manager of Quincy Street Distillery and an adjust professor of physics at Illinois Institute of Technology. He worked almost 20 years at Argonne National Laboratory, including as associate deputy laboratory directory for the Advanced Photon Source and project direct for the APS Upgrade. Prior to that, he served as the interim director and associate director of the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne and led its Nanofabrication Group. He also served as an adjunct professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago. He earned B.A. and B.S. at Cornell University, M.S. in materials science and physics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Ph.D. in physics at Uppsala University. He joined Argonne in 1995, and established programs in X-ray lithography, optics, microtomography, and high-throughput microanalysis. He managed the $72 million design, construction, and instrumenting of the Center for Nanoscale Materials. He has co-authored more than 200 papers, six patents, and an R&D 100 Award.
