The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to Host a Seminar on Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is hosting a seminar titled: “Recent Work on Reduced-Cost PM Machines and an Industry-Friendly Approach to Their Control”.

The seminar will take place on Friday, October 4, 2013 by Professor Gianmario Pellegrino from the Politecnico di Torino from 10:30 am to 11:30 am in the Galvin Center on 16th floor of the IIT Tower.

The world of Permanent Magnet (PM) synchronous machines spans a very wide range of sizes and uses. Recent key electrification applications such as traction, green energy conversion, and more-electric aircraft make use of high-density PM machines of different types, including salient-pole Interior PM (IPM) and Surface-mounted PM (SPM) machines that are designed to operate with high levels of magnetic saturation. Two major concerns are slowing the penetration of such high-density and nonlinear PM synchronous machines: 1) the high cost of the permanent magnets; and 2) the lack of a control technique that can be applicable to any type of PM machine with no need for cumbersome calibration or identification, similar to what engineers are accustomed to when designing induction motor drives. This lecture will provide an overview on how these two key technical issues have been approached and the progress that has been made towards resolving them.
