Higher Education Rally in Springfield—February 8

The Illinois Tech community is encouraged to attend the Higher Education Rally in Springfield, Illinois, on Wednesday, February 8.

The rally will take place at 1 p.m. at the Capitol Building’s first floor rotunda. Attendees should plan to arrive by 12:30 p.m.

In addition to the rally itself, students can also contact their own campus representatives in the House and Senate, alumni members, and most importantly, their own hometown State Senator and State Representative if they are from Illinois. Find out how to look up State Senators and Representatives here: How to Identify and Contact Your State Legislators.

See answers to common questions about the rally below:

  1. What should people wear?

Students should wear school colors, comfortable shoes, and avoid ragged or torn clothing.

  1. Can we bring signs to the rally?

Do not bring signs on sticks. Signs that can be held up by hand should be fine, although they may not be allowed outside of the first floor of the Statehouse.

  1. Where can we park our cars or buses?

You can find a map of the Capitol Complex with some parking suggestions here:Springfield Statehouse Map and Parking Information. Additionally, click here to view a Springfield visitor’s map.

  1. Where can we eat?

This link references several area restaurants. There is also a cafeteria in the basement of the Stratton Building, located just west of the Statehouse. There is a tunnel that connects the Statehouse to the Stratton Building.

  1. What security can we expect?

All visitors to the Statehouse will have to go through a security checkpoint, which includes an airport magnetometer. These are located on the east, north, and west sides of the Statehouse. You can also enter the complex via the Stratton Building, but you also have to go through a security checkpoint.

  1. How else should we prepare?

Think about your own personal story and situation, and be prepared to tell it. Nothing is more important or effective.
