Illinois Tech Hosts Special Olympics High School Basketball

Illinois Tech Athletics and its Student-Athletic Advisory Committee hosted Special Olympics Chicago High School Basketball on January 25-26. The two-day event, which was held in the Keating Sports Center, featured hundreds of athletes and dozens of teams.

“We were glad to once again host this great event in Keating Sports Center,” said Illinois Tech Director of Athletics Joe Hakes. “The joy and passion with which these athletes compete is evident, and we are happy to have our SAAC assist with running the tournament. We look forward to this event every year and are rewarded by the smiles and hugs we see over the two days.”

“Our relationship with Illinois Tech started about five years ago,” said Assistant Director at SOILL Dani Chitwood. “Facilities Director Usha Gilmore, the staff, and students at Illinois Tech have been tremendously supportive of Special Olympics in Chicago. We are very appreciative for all that Illinois Tech does and look forward to continuing this relationships for years to come.”

The Scarlet Hawks who volunteered at the event enjoyed the event as well.

“Watching all of the athletes have fun has been an awesome experience,” said sophomore Men’s Soccer player Anastasios Manolis. “They are playing the game out of love and with a smile on their face no matter the result. Being able to see it first-hand has been great.”
