Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s 131st Birthday Party to Feature Architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien

On March 29, the Mies van der Rohe Society will host a birthday party for Ludwig Mies van der Rohe featuring the design firm of Tod Williams and Billie Tsien (TWBTA).

According to Architect Magazine in 2013, “TWBTA buildings are confident buildings and have a way of placing themselves into the landscape as if they have always been there.” A reception begins at 5 p.m. and the lecture will follow at 6 p.m.

Celebrating Mies’ 131st birthday, the event at S. R. Crown Hall continues an annual tradition for the Mies van der Rohe Society. S. R. Crown Hall, widely recognized as Mies’ masterpiece building and a National Historic Landmark, sits at 3360 South State Street, Chicago, on Illinois Institute of Technology’s historic Mies Campus. Crown Hall was completely restored in 2005, 50 years after its completion. Time Magazine in 2004 said, “This is one of the world’s most influential, inspiring, and astonishing structures.”

The Mies van der Rohe Society is dedicated to art, culture, and the preservation of the Mies legacy in Chicago. The Mies Society recently made possible the restoration of Carr Memorial Chapel, Mies’ only religious building, located on Illinois Tech’s campus.

Tickets to the event are $35 per person for reception admission and a reserved seat at the lecture. The lecture is free for those wishing to attend the lecture only without a reserved seat. Complimentary parking is available. For registration or further information, visit miessociety.org or contact Lauren Shelby at 312.567.5030.
