CTBUH and IIT Begin $300,000 Research Project to Study the Life Cycle of Tall Building Structural Systems
December 5, 2012The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), in conjunction with Illinois Institute of Technology, has launched a multi-faceted research project to study the life cycles of various tall building structural systems, sponsored by a $300,000 grant from ArcelorMittal. “A Whole Life Cycle Assessment of the Sustainable Aspects of Structural Systems in Tall Buildings” will create a definitive comparison of the life-cycle implications of steel, concrete and composite structural systems in tall buildings. -

Architecture Faculty, Students, and Alumni Design a New Prentice
November 20, 2012The Chicago Architectural Club's latest project, "2012 Chicago Prize Competition: Future Prentice," generated 81 new and visionary proposals for Bertrand Goldberg's Prentice Women’s Hospital. The effort was led by CAC co-presidents Brian Strawn and IIT College of Architecture Adjunct Associate Professor Karla Sierralta, in collaboration with AIA Chicago and the Chicago Architecture Foundation. -
Design proposals from Studio Associate Professor Tim Brown, Studio Assistant Professor Mary Pat Mattson, and Adjunct Associate Professor Martin Klaeschen are part of the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s new exhibit on Prentice Hospital.

Architectural Record reports that proposals seeking to preserve and expand Northwestern University’s Prentice Women’s Hospital, submitted for a competition sponsored by the Chicago Architectural Club, will not be considered by the university, which has plans to demolish the structure to build its new biomedical research facility. The article notes that the judges for the design competition include IIT Architecture Professor John Ronan and architectural historian Kevin Harrington.
