Traveling This Summer? Here’s How Illinois Tech’s Benefits Work Overseas

With summer now in full swing, many are making travel plans for trips overseas. Did you know that Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) has provisions for overseas care, and that Illinois Tech’s life insurance plan provides travel assistance as well? Here’s how:

  • For those covered under Illinois Tech’s health plan, BCBS has provisions for overseas care through the Blue Card WorldWide program. When you need medical care, you will generally need to pay out of pocket for any services and then file a claim for reimbursement when you return to the United States. There is a flyer on the Human Resources Portal Health benefits page that you should print and take with you, as it has toll-free U.S. and international numbers if you should have questions or need assistance.
  • For all benefits-eligible employees, Dearborn National, our life insurance vendor, has a Travel Assistance program. This program provides medical evacuation in the event you become ill overseas and need assistance getting back to the U.S., and may assist in getting a helper to you in such a situation. There is a flyer available on the HR Portal Life Insurance benefits page with additional information.

Before you travel, make sure to print copies of the Blue Card Worldwide and Travel Assistance flyers or download them to your electronic devices!
