OTS Update on Java Security Issue
January 14, 2013Over the weekend the U.S. government announced security concerns with Java, a programming language and computing platform that is the underlying technology for many web-based utilities and business applications. Although some news outlets have recommended that users disable Java on their personal computers, OTS urges IIT users not to do so. -
2013 Social Security Rate Increase and First Paycheck
January 11, 2013The Social Security tax rate increase to 6.2% applies to all wages paid in 2013, even if a portion of the wages were earned in 2012. As a result, all wages earned for the period December 23, 2012 through January 5, 2013 but paid in 2013 is subject to the 6.2% rate. -

January 7, 2013The recently passed tax legislation preserves tax rates as they were at the end of 2012 except for those individuals earning more than $400,000 and households earning more than $450,000. -
IRS Announces Business Mileage Rate Increase for 2013
January 7, 2013Effective on January 1, 2013, the standard mileage rate for privately owned vehicles while on official IIT business will increase to 56.5 cents per mile from 55.5 cents per mile. IIT’s 2013 travel expense report has been adjusted to reflect the new rate. -
Deadline for IIT Staff Excellence Awards Extended
December 21, 2012Each year, IIT recognizes staff members who have submitted innovative ideas and best practices during the year with Staff Excellence Awards. The success of our students, faculty and university would not be possible without the outstanding support and services the IIT staff provides. This is your opportunity to nominate a staff member who exemplifies IIT’s spirit of excellence for a Staff Excellence Award. Candidates should have served as role models for others, displayed special initiative well beyond what was expected and offered distinguished service to the IIT community during the 2012 calendar year. The deadline for submitting nominations for the IIT Staff Excellence Awards has been extended to January 15. -
Office of Human Resources Closing Early
December 17, 2012The IIT Office of Human Resources will be closing at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 18. Normal office hours will resume at 8:30 am on Wednesday, December 19. -
Additional Medicare Tax /Unresolved Payroll Tax Issues for 2013
December 14, 2012The Affordable Care Act imposed an additional 0.9% Medicare tax on wages received after December 31, 2012, that exceed the applicable threshold for the individual’s filing status. For married persons filing jointly, the threshold is $250,000; for married persons filing separately, the threshold is $125,000; and for all others, the threshold is $200,000.
