Silver in Antimicrobial Plastic Packaging Leaches Into Foods
January 23, 2025Timothy Duncan, a research scientist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with colleagues from the Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH), demonstrated through research that silver can leach from nanoparticle-containing plastic packaging into the food it holds. While antimicrobial packaging is recognized for its ability to extend food shelf life, prevent illnesses, and reduce food waste, this new research highlights a reason for caution when using such materials, and could play a role in future policy decisions. -

December 10, 2024Illinois Tech will host the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) 2025 from June 2 to August 8, 2025. This program offers immersive, hands-on research opportunities that allow participants to explore exciting data science and computational mathematics topics. All applications received by January 31, 2025, will be fully considered. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. -
