FDSN Spring 2021 Seminar: Protective Effects and Mechanisms of Muscadine Grapes or Wine on Gut Inflammation

Join the Department of Food Science and Nutrition for this FDSN Seminar Series event featuring Liwei Gu, professor of food and nutrition sciences at the University of Florida. The event will take place on March 18 from 1 p.m.-2 p.m.

Muscadine is a grape cultivar grown in the southeast United States. Muscadine grapes and wine have an unique polyphenol profile, and they were found to mitigate ulcerative colitis and preserve gut barrier. Gu will discuss the protective effects and mechanisms of muscadine grapes or wine on gut inflammation.

Bio

Liwei Gu is a professor of food and nutrition sciences in the food science and human nutrition department at the University of Florida. He received the honor of UF Research Foundation Professor in 2016 and UF Term Professor in 2017. Gu serves as an associate editor for Journal of Science of Food and Agriculture,  and he makes decisions on about 100 submitted research papers annually. As director of IR-4 Southern Region, he leads a team of scientists that conduct field tests and residue analysis of pesticides on fruits and vegetables in the southeast U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Gu is Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher. His research programs are focused on the chemistry, bioavailability, and bioactivity of nutraceuticals in foods and dietary supplements. He published 92 original research in food science, nutritional science, and pharmaceutics journals with an H-index of 45. Gu advises graduate students in both the food science and nutritional science disciplines. His graduate students have won numerous awards and found employment in food industry or academia. Gu is a member of Institute of Food Technologists, American Society of Nutrition, and Florida Wine and Grape Growers Association.
