IIT Students Excel at Chicago Area Undergraduate Research Symposium
April 15, 2013More than 160 undergraduates in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, economics, humanities and engineering, among others, and from nearly a dozen institutions participated in the Chicago Area Undergraduate Research Symposium held on April 6 at the Hermann Hall Conference Center on IIT Main Campus. IIT students excelled at the annual event, winning in three categories: Overall Poster Presentation—Barrett Leslie Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology—Catalina Rivera Math, Computer Sciences, Engineering, Physics—Xin Zheng: A Novel Approach in Detecting the Normal and Shear Forces at the Fingertips with Minimal Hysteresis -

Physics to Hold Joint Meeting with American Nuclear Society April 17 at IIT
April 11, 2013The American Nuclear Society Chicago Local Section and the IIT Department of Physics will hold a joint meeting on Wednesday, April 17, at 6:30 pm in LS 111. Jeff Terry, associate professor of physics, will present the lecture, “Synchrotron Radiation Studies of Advanced Nuclear Energy Materials.” Terry’s talk will focus on the application of synchrotron techniques to measure the electronic structure and the nano- and meso-scale geometric structure of materials of interest to the nuclear community. The methods that have been used to handle radioactive materials safely at synchrotron radiation facilities will also be discussed. -
2013 CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipend Program Nomination Deadline Approaching
April 4, 2013IIT College of Science and Letters Associate Dean Matt Bauer announced that the college is accepting nominations for $5,000 CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipends for summer 2013. Up to eight stipends will be awarded. All CSL majors are eligible, and all IIT faculty may nominate a student. Nominations are due by Monday, April 15. -

Physics Major Receives Prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
April 3, 2013Emily Hommerding, a senior physics major, has received a prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation. The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes outstanding senior undergraduate and doctoral-level students in the natural, social, and engineering sciences at U.S. institutions.
