July 17, 2013Thomas Irving, biology executive associate chair and professor of biology and physics, gave the talk “Sub-Millisecond Solution Scattering at the BioCAT Facility at the Advanced Photon Source” at the International Symposium on Diffraction Structural Biology held May 26–29 in Nagoya, Japan. -
Jose De Arcos Wins Pengnian Scholarship
July 17, 2013Jose De Arcos, a Ph.D. candidate in physics, has been awarded a Pengnian Scholarship to study at Tsinghua University in Beijing this fall. De Arcos, a student of Christopher White, professor of physics and vice provost for academic affairs, focuses on neutrino physics and has worked on the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment in China. At Tsinghua University, he will be in the nuclear science and technology program in the Department of Engineering Physics. -

High School Teachers Learn That It’s a Materials World at ASM Camp
July 16, 2013It didn’t fall in shovelable amounts and was green instead of white, but the cups of “instant snow” that were passed around to a group of Chicago-area high school science teachers in IIT’s Engineering 1 building made as strong an impression as a summertime blizzard. The demonstration of the powdery hydrophilic sodium polyacrylate polymer combined with varying amounts of water (some=fluffy clusters; lots=slush) was just one of many held as part of the ASM Materials Camp®–Teachers the week of July 8–12 on IIT Main Campus.
