UIC’s Ashfaq Khokhar Is Appointed ECE Chair
July 23, 2013Ashfaq Khokhar has been appointed chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective Friday, August 16, 2013. Khokhar joins Illinois Institute of Technology from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where he is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences. Currently, he also serves as Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UIC. -
High School Teachers Learn That It’s a Materials World at ASM Camp
July 16, 2013It didn’t fall in shovelable amounts and was green instead of white, but the cups of “instant snow” that were passed around to a group of Chicago-area high school science teachers in IIT’s Engineering 1 building made as strong an impression as a summertime blizzard. The demonstration of the powdery hydrophilic sodium polyacrylate polymer combined with varying amounts of water (some=fluffy clusters; lots=slush) was just one of many held as part of the ASM Materials Camp®–Teachers the week of July 8–12 on IIT Main Campus. -

The X-Cube Kicks It Up a Notch
June 21, 2013Last winter, IIT Magazine reported on Dane Christianson, now a third-year mechanical engineering student, and his X-Cube twisty puzzle invention. On June 7, Christianson opened a Kickstarter crowdfunding page to help raise money to manufacture the puzzle for possible distribution through Marbles the Brain Store and within one week, surpassed his goal of $30,000. (As of today's posting, more than $46,000 has been raised for the X-Cube.) -

Rebecca Wingate (M.S. CE ’12) Awarded Fulbright Fellowship
June 11, 2013The International Center is pleased to announce IIT's second Fulbright recipient in its history. Rebecca Wingate, a recent alumna who received her master's degree from IIT College of Engineering Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering last December, will be going to Hepia in Switzerland in September for her project titled "Lean Construction and Railway Infrastructure Maintenance."
