IIT Researchers Win American Academy of Environmental Engineering and Science Honor Award
March 27, 2013Illinois Institute of Technology researchers Krishna Pagilla, professor of environmental engineering, Benjamin Stark, professor of biology, and graduate students Marina Arnaldos (Ph.D. ENVE ’12) and Stephanie Kunkel (BIOL) were awarded the Honor Award for University Research by the American Academy of Environmental Engineering and Scientists (AAEES) for their research, “Improving Energy Sustainability of Wastewater Treatment by Low DO Nitrification Process.” -
Honoring Dale Webster, Bacterial Hemoglobin Pioneer – March 7
February 25, 2013The biology department will honor Dale Webster, distinguished professor of biology, professor emeritus, and founder of the field of bacterial hemoglobins, on Thursday, March 7. The day’s activities will include a lunch, campus tour, and visit to the department. -
Associate Professor of Biology and Biomedical Engineering Joseph Orgel’s research studying surviving collagen found in fossilized bones of dinosaurs was featured on WBEZ’s Clever Apes on March 7. The following day, biochemistry undergraduate Faraz Hussain wrote a guest post for Clever Apes investigating a variety of research into the evolutionary developmental biology of birds such as chickens, ancestors to the theropods.

Menhart Receives Three-Year MDA Research Award
March 1, 2012Associate Professor of Biology Nick Menhart was awarded a three-year research grant totaling $265,251 from the Muscular Dystrophy Association to study the properties of modified dystrophin proteins in Duchenne (DMD) and Becker (BMD) muscular dystrophies. In all, MDA selected 38 research projects totaling $12 million that focus on identifying the underlying causes of neuromuscular disease and finding treatments to slow, stop and reverse damage caused by disease processes. -
IIT Biology and Environmental Engineering Researchers Explore How VHb Enhances Ethanol Production in E Coli in Diverse Growth Media
February 8, 2012Biology and environmental engineering researchers at IIT describe how Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) can enhance ethanol production in Escherichia coli in a variety of growth media by increasing the oxygen supply in a new article in Biomass and Bioenergy. The work is an important step in research in the production of ethanol from biomass.
