				IIT Researchers Discover Powerful Tumor SuppressorOctober 24, 2012A team of Illinois Institute of Technology researchers has discovered a powerful tumor suppressor found only in cancer cells, BaxΔ2, suggesting the possibility that the sick cells are generating a previously unknown protein to stop their growth. The discovery offers exciting possibilities for cancer prognosis and treatment.

				IIT Applied Math Alumnus Jacob Matijevic Honored Posthumously for Work on Mars Rover MissionsOctober 24, 2012Jacob “Jake” Matijevic (Math ‘69), a great space engineer, died on August 20, 2012 in Los Angeles, Calif. Matijevic received his bachelor’s degree from IIT and later earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1973. In honor of Jacob’s contribution to the Mars rover missions, NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory named the rock found by the Curiosity rover, “Jake Matijevic.”

				Associate Professor of Physics Jeff Terry Plenary Speaker at NuMat 2012: the Nuclear Materials ConferenceOctober 15, 2012On October 23, Jeff Terry, associate professor of physics, will be a plenary speaker at NuMat 2012: the Nuclear Materials Conference in Osaka, Japan. His talk is titled “Synchrotron Radiation Studies of Advanced Nuclear Energy Materials” and will be part of the structural and functional materials for fission and fusion reactors session.
