IIT Trustee Martin Cooper (EE ′50, M.S. ′57) and Other Mobile Phone Pioneers Win Draper Prize
January 15, 2013The mobile phone pioneers who laid the groundwork for today’s smartphone will be presented with engineering’s highest honor during a February 19 ceremony in Washington. The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) will honor Martin Cooper, Joel Engel, Richard Frenkiel, Thomas Haug and Yoshihisa Okumura with the Charles Stark Draper Prize, which annually recognizes engineers whose accomplishments have significantly benefited society. Considered the Nobel Prize of engineering, the prize includes a $500,000 award. -

IIT Robotics Lab Develops Crash-Resistant Hybrid Terrestrial/Aerial Robot (Video)
November 29, 2012The HyTAQ Robot (Hybrid Terrestrial and Aerial Quadrotor) was developed in the IIT Robotics Lab by Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Matthew Spenko and PhD candidate Arash Kalantari. The novel mobile robot is capable of both aerial and terrestrial locomotion. -
Research presented by Associate Professor Konstantinos Arfanakis and colleagues at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America showing that reading, writing, and other cognitive activity contribute to healthier brains late in life, several news outlets reported.

Investiture of the Hyosung S. R. Cho Endowed Chair in Engineering
October 26, 2012Join IIT in celebrating the tradition of honoring distinguished faculty. On Thursday, November 15, Vijay Ramani will be invested with the Hyosung S. R. Cho Endowed Chair in Engineering. Jim Fenton, director of the Florida Solar Energy Center at the University of Central Florida, will join IIT senior leadership in providing remarks. The ceremony will begin at 4 pm in the McCormick Tribune Campus Center’s McCloska Auditorium, with a reception to follow in the McCloska Ballroom.
