May 2, 2014The need to take stochastic effects into account for modeling complex systems has now become widely recognized. IIT Professor of Applied Mathematic Jinqiao Duan, along with Wei Wang from Nanjing University, Nanjing, PR China, addresses this in his book “Effective Dynamics of Stochastic Partial Differential Equations,” published by Elsevier. -

MMF and MSF Students Win Third Place in Trading Competition
May 10, 2013A team of Master of Mathematical Finance and Master of Science in Finance students won third place at the University of Chicago Midwest Trading Competition, held April 12 - 13 at the Chicago Booth Gleacher Center. IIT Team members Xi Liu (MMF candidate, team captain), Rui Tu (MMF candidate), He Wang (MSF candidate), Yuchen Zhang (MSF candidate) received a $1,000 prize. The competition was sponsored by OptionsCity Software and CME Group at the University of Chicago. -
Plan to Attend the Chicago Area SIAM Student Conference
April 2, 2013The Chicago Area SIAM Student Conference (CASSC) is the collaborative effort between applied mathematics students from IIT, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago to host an annual event connecting students in applied mathematics and related sciences to developing branches of mathematics with industrial applications in and outside of academia. This year marks the first such jointly-organized conference, which will be held on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28 at the UIC East Campus (UIC Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science). It will feature three plenary speakers: Donald Barnhart (i-Cyt/Sony), Raissa D'Souza (UC Davis) and Lev Reyzin (UIC) as well as shorter talks from graduate students and a poster session showcasing the work of graduate and undergraduate students. -

Applied Mathematics Professional Master’s Program to Launch Fall 2013
March 4, 2013In fall 2013, IIT will launch a new professional master’s program in applied mathematics. This non-thesis master’s degree will provide applied and computational mathematics training in conjunction with teaching communication and teamwork skills demanded by today’s employers. The program offers students an exciting capstone experience solving serious, real-world problems in business and industry using modeling, statistical and data analysis, stochastic analysis and optimization techniques. -
IIT Applied Math Alumnus Jacob Matijevic Honored Posthumously for Work on Mars Rover Missions
October 24, 2012Jacob “Jake” Matijevic (Math ‘69), a great space engineer, died on August 20, 2012 in Los Angeles, Calif. Matijevic received his bachelor’s degree from IIT and later earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1973. In honor of Jacob’s contribution to the Mars rover missions, NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory named the rock found by the Curiosity rover, “Jake Matijevic.” -
IIT Third-Year Undergraduate Triple Play
March 29, 2012Anita Thomas (AMAT 3rd year) will present her research, "Sampling Within the k-Means Algorithm to Cluster Large Datasets," at the Infinite Possibilities Conference, March 30-31 at the University of Maryland. Thomas reduced the amount of data needed to obtain accurate clusters, thus decreasing runtime to a reasonable speed. -
Ye Accepts Postdoc at Syracuse University
March 22, 2012Qi Ye, Ph.D. candidate in applied mathematics, has accepted a two-year Philip T. Church postdoctoral position in the department of mathematics at Syracuse University, where he will be teaching and conducting research with Professors Lixin Shen and Yuesheng Xu on problems in computational harmonic analysis.
