Women’s History Month Event: “Unforgotten Women: Keeping Legacies Alive through Stories”

Writer Mairead Case, filmmaker Melina Kolb and interdisciplinary artist Saleem Hue Penny highlight three women whose lives and work deserve to be known and remembered. Spring Break School Visit: Inspiring Young Minds
March 15, 2013For the past two consecutive years during IIT's annual spring break, students from all majors have come together to speak to elementary and high school students about staying on track for college. Tanya Cabrera, associate director of Minority Outreach and undocumented student liaison is coordinating a visit with seventh- and eighth-graders from Burr Elementary (at North and Ashland avenues in Chicago) to inspire young minds about early preparation and career options. -

March 12, 2013The award-winning movie Girl Inside is the account of a young adult transitioning from male to female and her "emotional, intellectual, and spiritual journey of self-discovery . . . (amidst) the physical journey of hormones and surgery. Sometimes funny, sometimes painful, this sweet coming of age story is both an intimate portrait and a thoughtful exploration of what it means to be a woman." (Women Make Movies) Sponsored by the IIT Department of Humanities and the Office of Campus Life, the film will be shown on Wednesday, March 13 from 7:00–10:00 pm in the MTCC Auditorium. -

March 12, 2013Plan to engage in a lively discussion at Paul V. Galvin Library in celebration of both Women's History Month and the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf. Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood by Fatima Mernissi and The Butterfly Mosque: A Young American Woman's Journey to Love and Islam by G. Willow Wilson are the books that will be featured. One reflects the life of a girl born in Morocco in the 1940s, while the other is a recent account of a young woman's conversion and travels. -
